Adaptability and Resistance: The Currency of Health and Well-Being
Jarek Esarco
When it comes to health, two of the most important qualities we have are adaptability and resistance. These factors are two sides of the same coin that pay major dividends towards our body’s potential to be well.
The world is chock-full of physical, chemical and emotional stress. But fear not, our body is designed to handle and manage a fair share of it. The Nerve System is tasked with resisting and adapting the body to these stressors so it can maintain and attain homeostasis.
To adapt is the capacity to respond with intelligence. Adaptability is the inherent ability of our body to respond to harmful influences in a positive way.
To resist is the capacity to endure with intelligence. Resistance is the inherent ability of our body to endure harmful influences in a positive way.
If our Nerve System can’t resist and adapt to stressors, compensations arise. When the body can’t fully acclimate to stress or a combination of stresses, it must find a way to recoup the loss in order to sustain a relative level of homeostasis. The body is some way has to “rob Peter in order to pay Paul.”
One specific type of compensation is a vertebral subluxation. A vertebral subluxation disrupts the structure and function of the upper cervical spine and brainstem. A compensatory reaction is not as optimal for our health because it is a disruption of structure and function potential.
This results in a decreased potential for adaptability and resistance. Unadapted physical, chemical and emotional stress will interfere with the body's ability to resist physical, chemical, and emotional influence. The inverse is also true: Unresisted physical, chemical and emotional influence will interfere with the body’s capacity to adapt to physical, chemical and emotional stress.
A disruption of the upper cervical spine has a negative impact on how our whole Nerve System resists and adapts to the stress of the world.
Making sure the Nerve System is strong enough to resist and adapt to stress is the goal of Chiropractic. Removing disruptions to the functional capacity of the brain stem and structural integrity of the upper cervical spine allows for a greater expression of resistance and adaptability in the body overall.
To reduce neurological disruption, I correct the vertebral subluxation through a specific adjustment. A better expression of the inherent ability of the body to resist and adapt to harmful influences and stress is achieved when a subluxation is corrected. Health can be wealth if we are interested in accruing it.
