What Makes a Good Chiropractor?

There are two qualities that make a good Chiropractor: How well they adhere to the Chiropractic objective and how specific they are with their care.

What is the objective?

The Chiropractic objective is “to contribute to health through the correction of a vertebral subluxation.” - Joseph Strauss, DC

Simply put, a good Chiropractor adjusts vertebral subluxations. Correcting vertebral subluxations is what distinguishes Chiropractic from all other health professions.

How does an adjustment of a vertebral subluxation contribute to health?

The Nerve System controls every movement we make, regulates all body organs, senses everything we feel, and relates us to the outside world. The system uses nerves to transmit these functions.

The main “nerve highway” occurs in the spine. It connects the nerves of the brain to the nerves of the body. A misalignment of the spinal column can disrupt the functional information coming from the brain and/or from the body. This is called a vertebral subluxation. A vertebral subluxation prevents various organs, glands and tissues from functioning at their best.

The adjustment corrects the vertebral subluxation and helps improve nerve transmission. The innate healing ability of the body can then work more efficiently. With better functioning nerves, health improves.

What is specific care?

What goes hand in hand with the Chiropractic objective is the specificity of the Chiropractor to adjust the vertebral subluxation.

D.D. Palmer, The Discoverer of Chiropractic, said that the Chiropractor is one “who is specific, one who adjusts one vertebra with a special purpose. A Chiropractor who adjusts “all up and down the spine” is a manipulator.”

B.J. Palmer, The Developer of Chiropractic, further expanded this understanding. Dr. B.J. said that an exceptional Chiropractor provides a specific adjustment that is “tailor-made; each adjustment built for each particular subluxation in this individual person who carries a subluxation unlike any other...In this way you fit adjustment to subluxation and not subluxation to adjustment.”

The willingness of the Chiropractor to be specific determines how well the Chiropractic objective can be met. And this means better health outcomes for you the patient.

When a person seeks out a good Chiropractor, it is essential that they are searching for one who has the Chiropractic objective not only in mind but specifically in practice.
