Constipation and Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic
If you are like most Americans, you are probably a little hungover from the holidays. A month and a half of overeating, overdrinking and overstressing has no doubt put a toll on your well-being. If you’re like me, all the overdoing has led to some “under-doodooing” (low brow humor I know). To put it more eloquently, this lack of bowel movement is called constipation. Constipation is when bowel movements become difficult or less frequent. Constipation can cause toxicity leading to headaches, back pain, abdominal pain and distention. Constipation occurs when there is a partial paralysis of the muscles found in the small and/or large intestines. The muscles of the intestines are under the direct control of the nerve system.
Paralysis? But I don’t feel paralyzed! When we hear the word 'paralyzed', we automatically think of someone bound to a wheelchair who can’t move their legs and/or arms. But it is important to understand that there are many levels of paralysis. Paralysis is defined as a loss of the ability to move. That inability to move could be partial or complete; 100%, 50%, 10%, etc. What can cause this partial paralysis? The most detrimental partial paralysis of the body is the vertebral subluxation.
A vertebral subluxation can results in partial paralysis in any muscle of the body. The biceps in our arms as muscles but we need to remember that the intestines are driven by muscles as well. The muscles are the movers of the body. What is the mover of the muscles? The central nerve system. The central functioning command center for the nerve system is the brainstem. Brainstem tissue is found between the two top bones of the neck. A vertebral subluxation, the misalignment of the two top bones that results in added pressure on the brainstem area of nerve tissue. This added pressure affects the Nerve Systems ability to send out functional information at 100%. If a muscle supplied by a nerve coming from the brainstem is only getting 90% of its functional information, then it is 10% paralyzed. If the nerves that supply the intestines aren’t getting the proper signal from the brainstem, then they are not properly working. This improper work can result in partial paralysis which can result in constipation of the bowel.
What is the medical treatment for constipation? To sum it up: if inhibited, stimulate. The common medical remedy usually consist of a laxative. It is estimated that Americans spend over $1,300,000 every day on laxatives. What do you get for 1.3 million dollars? Side effects- or more correctly stated, effects. The effects of laxatives can lead to bloating, cramping, diarrhea, nausea, gas, increased thirst, increased constipation if not taken with enough water, throat irritation, belching, urine discoloration and/or rectal irritation. What happens though after the drug wears off from speeding up function? Function is going to go back to its inhibited place. But what if instead of stimulating or inhibiting- we try to restore?
And that is where OHIO Specific Chiropractic comes in. The goal of care at OHIO Specific Chiropractic is to help restore function back to your nerve system and body naturally. I do this by analyzing the central nerve system for any interference resulting from a vertebral subluxation.
