As a Pediatric, Family Wellness and Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractor, I focus on one of the most important “S” words that effects your health. No, it’s not “symptom” or “sickness.” My concentration is on a vertebral subluxation.
It is a vertebral subluxation that guides my care. My Chiropractic evaluation is NOT based on what symptoms or sickness you have but based on what subluxation you have. Why focus on a subluxation and not on symptoms or sickness?
Making my care subluxation-based makes my care neurophysiologically-based as well. Neurophysiology is a foundation of healthy function. Health is predicated on how well your neurophysiology is functioning.
A vertebral subluxation disrupts the expression of neurophysiology. When a subluxation is present, Nerve System function can’t be at its best. This means your health can’t be at its best as well.
The same can not be said for symptoms. The presence of symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean your health is not at its best. A symptom can be a marker of either healthy function or sick function. Symptoms are an expression of function, not a disruption in function.
For example, if you eat something that is rotten, a healthy response would be to remove the tainted food out of your system as quickly as possible, hence symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. While both are often very unpleasant symptoms, in this situation they are healthy responses.
A fever is another classic example of a healthy response with unpleasant symptoms. Symptoms such as a rise in body temperature, loss of appetite and lethargy are all part of the normal immune response of the body to fight off an invading pathogen.
As a Chiropractor, I don’t focus on sickness either because the Salutogenic model of care I use does not treat sickness as the entity. The Salutogenic model focuses on creating and maintaining health. Health in this model is the entity, not sickness. The Salutogenic model adheres closers to the true relationship found between health and sickness.
Any sickness is a loss of health, not the other way around. This relationship is similar to how darkness is a loss of light and not the inverse.
Light is at 100% potential. But things can obstruct the expression of light. An example of a light obstructor is an umbrella. An umbrella obstructs the expression of light by disrupting the current flow of light energy. The result is a loss of light expressed in various shades of darkness.
The same can be said about our health. Health is at 100% potential. But things can obstruct the expression of health. An example of a health obstructor is a vertebral subluxation. A vertebral subluxation obstructs the expression of health by disrupting the current flow of nerve energy. The result is a loss of health expressed in various conditions of sickness.
If we want to reveal more light we need to remove obstructions to its expression. So sticking with the above analogy, we remove the umbrella. If we want to reveal more health, we need to remove obstructions to its expression. So we remove a vertebral subluxation through a specific adjustment.
Basing my attention not only on a subluxation, but on your subluxation allows me to personalize my care for you. Personalized Chiropractic is not one-size-fits-all medicine. Care is specific to your individual subluxation.
Stepping back and looking at the big picture, we can see that healthy neurophysiology is a hallmark of wellness. And since neurophysiology is a part of the gold standard, any loss of neurophysiology can result in sickness and its associated symptoms. When sickness or symptoms are your baselines, your perception is narrowed.
When health is the starting point, you can see the forest for the trees. Whether healthy, unhealthy, symptomatic or asymptomatic, neurophysiology is at the root of it all. Chiropractic looks to the root cause.
I believe, it is more beneficial to have singularity in a cause than to have plurality in cures. A vertebral subluxation can cause a disruption in overall neurophysiology. Adjusting a vertebral subluxation promotes better neurophysiology. This improves health, independent of sickness or symptoms.
