Chiropractors Do The Same Thing to Everybody, Don't They?

Chiropractors do the same thing to everybody, don't they?

Yes, and no. You see it depends on the meaning of the question.

Yes: Chiropractors do the same thing to everybody, they detect and correct vertebral subluxations.

And no: Chiropractors do not do the same thing to everybody; the actual detecting and correcting of the vertebral subluxation is unique to the individual.

No two spines are the same, which means no two vertebral subluxations are the same, which means no two Chiropractic adjustments are the same.

To the untrained eye, it might look like Chiropractors are doing the same thing to everybody. This though is not the case. Like honing any skill, the goal is to make it look effortless. A classically trained pianist will play Beethoven and chopsticks with the same ease. Similar concept.

What complicates things is that some Chiropractors in fact do the same thing to everybody. This is not the “gold standard” of Chiropractic. Here is where the modifier “specific” is important.

Chiropractic is specific. Sometimes though, Chiropractors are not. The bar is set high.

D.D. Palmer, The Discoverer of Chiropractic, said that the Chiropractor is one “who is specific, one who adjusts one vertebra with a special purpose. A Chiropractor who adjusts “all up and down the spine” is a manipulator.”

B.J. Palmer, The Developer of Chiropractic, further developed this understanding. B.J. Palmer said that an exceptional Chiropractor provides a specific adjustment that is “tailor-made; each adjustment built for each particular subluxation in this individual person who carries a subluxation unlike any other...In this way you fit adjustment to subluxation and not subluxation to adjustment.”

The willingness of the Chiropractor to be specific determines the quality of Chiropractic care. When the Chiropractor takes care of each person with a “special purpose”, any potential for Chiropractic care to be the “same thing” is null and void.
